TRUSTED BY THESE WELL KNOWN BRANDS AND HUNDREDS MORE.
The Friends Meeting House dates originally from 1688. The present building of 1790 is in the classic simple style that makes these Quaker buildings so honest and refreshing. St Paul’s Church of 1828 is a very different affair of yellow brick. It’s a cheap version of the many Commissioners’ churches which form an interesting part of our social history. With the explosion of urban populations during the industrial revolution, church building had fallen behind. So in 1818, partly to celebrate victory over Napoleon, partly to discourage progressive ideas, Parliament set aside a million pounds for the Waterloo Commission to build new churches. Most of the 214 completed were dull - built from much the same materials with little imagination. But they did help to usher in that hallmark of Victorian architecture - the Gothic Revival. |
